Know what your heart can handle, because if you push it too hard, it may not beat back. When German scientists examined factors associated with a sudden heart attack in 1,301 patients, they found that a person’s risk of attack was increased 5.7-fold within 2 hours of a bout of strenuous exercise and 1.6-fold within 2 hours of moderate exertion.

But know this: The study’s subjects were not in shape at the time of training. According to the researchers, physical exertion may trigger the onset of heart attack in a “dose-response fashion,” meaning the risk increases with the intensity of physical exertion and your overall (or lack of) fitness.

The key take-away:

Be safe and increase the intensity of your endurance training slowly, especially if you’re just starting to get back into exercise.
