Clocking in more than eight hours a day at the office can increase your risk of heart disease, according to a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology [AOL.com].

In a review of 12 studies involving 22,518 participants, researchers found that workers who spent extra time at the office were up to 80 percent more likely to suffer from heart disease compared to those who worked an eight-hour day.

Researchers noted that people who worked longer hours were more likely to be tired, feel stressed, skip exercise, and eat unhealthy meals, all which over time contribute to an unhealthy heart.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the average American worker puts in 8.6 hours of work a day, so take a look at your schedule and see where you’re not making the most efficient use of time. If you can’t find a way to cut your hours, take frequent water and walking breaks and bring plenty of healthy meals and snacks to the office (see “10 Energy Boosting Snacks for the Office”).
